April Clemens & Cobalt Tolbert
Mar

April Clemens & Cobalt Tolbert

April Patterson Clemens is a Vermont based indie-folk singer/songwriter from Texas. Beginning with garage bands in high school and then an alt-punk band at nineteen, she met a group of musicians in New York and travelled to Vermont, becoming part of the burgeoning Burlington music scene in the duo Blackthorne Wilderness (one of Seven Days newspaper’s Seven Bands to Watch). She later recorded her solo album, Heart in a Golden Cup, and, after various other projects including the introspective Steamboat Wonderlust and the jazz pop cover band Chanteuse da Boom, moved out to the country where she met Cobalt, the best damn guitar player she’d ever heard.

Cobalt Tolbert is a French-American singer-guitarist and has been rocking around Europe and the East Coast for over a decade now. Covering a wide range of styles, yet with a heart firmly rooted in the world of rock, Cobalt has played extensively as a solo act, as well as a duo with sibling Titien on drums. His other myriad projects and bands include the folk-rock act Carter Glass, the psychedelic classic rock Guano Loco, and the prog-punk Coquette. A known rockstar in Central Vermont and Paris, France, Tolbert brings flare and style to April's roster of original songs with his amazingly versatile guitar playing and exquisite ear.

Together, they bring to life April's extensive and ever expanding catalog of tunes.

“When she sings, Clemens channels medieval spirits with a rich, earthy tone that bends itself ethereally, the way water bends an image. Ghosts seem to wander through one song to the next on the controlled quiver of Clemens’ voice. Heart in a Golden Cup sounds as if it were recorded in a holy space, an ancient forest or medieval cathedral. Subtle, echoing vocals cast melodic shadows throughout the album. The poetry of Clemens’ lyrics and the beauty of her voice, accompanied by a simple, steady guitar, are at the heart of this album.” ~Alaina Janack, Seven Days

Her songs deal with sex and obsession, desire and rage, condensed to two and half minutes each and drawn from the sometimes-bumpy road of her travels. Musical heroes? Iggy Pop, Patti as well as Bessie Smith, Aimee Mann, Debbie Harry oh so many more. Whether busking on the street or on stages large or small, Ginger plays original songs and covers with a self-depreciating sense of humor that comes from not taking any of this too seriously.

Christine Malcolm & Sweet Cicely
Feb

Christine Malcolm & Sweet Cicely

Sweet Cicely is Northern VT folk-grass fun!  Fran Forim on upright bass, Marc Edwards on lead guitar, Hank Clark on mandolin and Christine Malcolm on rhythm guitar and washboard.  Good music comes from the heart and when Christine Malcolm, Fran Forim, Marc Edwards, Hank Clark get together to play there is a lot of big heartedness. Their band settles into a Northern Vermont groove that weaves folk-grass with threads of psychedelica and tufts of country and rock.  The friendship between these veteran musicians shines through every note.  Their style is intimate, personal and old school.  Christine writes songs, lead sings and plays some guitar.   Her debut recording- Crickets, Coyotes and the Big Yellow Moon, won the Times Argus 2015 Tammy Award for Best Country Record.  Fran Forim (Beg, Steal or Borrow) is literally rock solid on the upright bass and backing vocals.  What few people know is that she also bakes outstanding sourdough bread.  Marc Edwards (Heavy Nettles), brings a virtuosic skill on guitar and a musical creativity that shines through in his playing. The breadth of his musical interests is apparent in the ideas he shares in his leads, which are magically balanced by Hank Clark (Ida Mae Specker Band) on the mandolin.  Hank creates a gypsy, jazzy, jammy bluegrass vibe to texturize the sound and sings a bass harmony that adds on the other end of the sound spectrum.
Come join for a listen.  It's like hanging out at your friend's house eating the best homemade pie with your favorite drink at a comfortable place by the fire.  It's always a lot more fun if you are there. They hope to see you out in the wild!
